SUMMARY:The History of Witchcraft & Women: Magic\, rituals & the patriarchy
DESCRIPTION:Seed Talks presents… \nExplore modern witchcraft in a new light and its connections to feminism and political movements throughout history. Followed by Q&A. \nThe witch is a deeply important and appealing figure\, and her story is more relevant than ever. Witches weren’t evil\, and they certainly didn’t wear pointy black hats. Instead\, society has long used the idea of the witch as a dumping ground for everything it fears or hates in women. Witches are old – too old to be sexy\, too old to bear children – and even today\, we stigmatise older women as “problematic” or “ugly”. Exploring the true history of witches reveals much about ourselves\, how we got here\, and how we can change. \nBut who hunted witches? Surprisingly\, it wasn’t mostly men. It was often younger women\, pressured by patriarchal systems to blame older women in exchange for temporary favour\, that disappeared as they aged. This history still echoes today\, as generational divides between women persist and even worsen. Learning about witches reminds us of the importance of solidarity between generations – why we must stand together to break free from these old patterns. \n\nAge Restrictions: 16+ \nPlease contact the venue for any access requirements. \n

SUMMARY:Tanner\, Drury & Sutherland: An Illustrated talk by Jolyon Drury at Chippenham Museum
DESCRIPTION:“Robin Tanner was a firm friend of my father\, Paul Drury PRE\, who was instrumental in helping Robin purchase his first printing press. SUMMARY:The Codebreakers: Enigma\, Bletchley Park & the Battle of the Atlantic
DESCRIPTION:The Codebreakers: Enigma\, Bletchley Park & the Battle of the Atlantic\nAn illustrated presentation by Dr Mark Baldwin\nOne of the Second World War’s most fascinating stories is that of the Enigma machine\, a portable encryption device widely used by the Germans\, whose ciphers they believed to be totally secure. Nevertheless\, by mathematical analysis and modern technology (and a certain amount of good luck)\, the Allies devised techniques for ‘breaking’ Enigma ciphers\, and thus read several million German messages\, providing a wealth of reliable Intelligence. The attack on Enigma\, initiated by the Poles in the early 1930s\, was later perfected by the British at Bletchley Park\, today open to the public as a museum site.\nThe Intelligence gained was of immense value to the Allies in virtually every theatre of war\, but nowhere more so than in the Battle of the Atlantic\, that fierce conflict which lasted nearly six years and cost over 60\,000 lives. Dr Baldwin uses the Battle of the Atlantic to exemplify the importance of codebreaking in winning the war. \nAfter the presentation\, the audience are invited to take part in a hands-on practical demonstration of one of the few surviving Enigma machines. Only about 300 are known to survive worldwide; of these\, only about a dozen are in public collections in Britain. As these machines are so rare\, Dr Baldwin is providing an unusual opportunity for the audience not just to view\, but also to operate\, an original 1944 4-rotor Enigma machine (i.e. the more sophisticated model\, developed for the U-Boat service). This is of particular interest\, as there is no working Enigma machine on permanent public display anywhere in England north of Bletchley Park\, and nowhere at all in Wales\, Scotland or Ireland. \nHaving delivered over 300 presentations\, Dr Baldwin is currently one of Britain’s most experienced speakers on the Enigma machine and the work of the WW2 codebreakers. He has travelled widely throughout Britain addressing a variety of audiences – professional\, educational\, commercial and the general public – including many in theatres\, arts centres and festivals. In 2005\, he spoke in Germany (the first Briton to be invited to visit Germany with an Enigma machine) and Northern Ireland\, amongst other venues\, and in 2006 was asked to mount a hands-on Enigma display at the Imperial War Museum’s travelling exhibition in Shrewsbury. In 2008\, he undertook a second lecture tour in Poland\, and in 2010 mounted a crypto display at the annual Air Show at RAF Cosford\, gave a series of presentations on ‘The Secret War’ on board a cruise ship\, and has also spoken at Cranbrook\, Porthcurno\, Jersey\, Farncombe and Harrogate. \n  \n  \nStandard ticket £15 \nThis is a seated event. Please contact the venue for any access requirements. \nPlease note: tickets are non-refundable.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards
DESCRIPTION:Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards is Great Britain’s first Olympic Ski Jumper.\nEddie was ranked 55th in the world which qualified him as the only GB applicant for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. With the UK firmly backing the plasterer from Gloucestershire\, Eddie took to the slopes followed by a whirlwind of international press and media. Eddie competed in the 70m and 90m jump events\, but unfortunately came last in both events. \nAlthough he did not win an Olympic medal\, he did win a place in the hearts of spectators all around the globe. This was ultimately due to his lack of success\, but more importantly his pure determination and ‘have a go’ attitude. \nDuring the Winter Games closing ceremony\, the president of the Organizing Committee\, Frank King\, singled out Edwards for his contribution: “At these Games\, some competitors have won gold\, some have broken records\, and some of you have even soared like an eagle” \nA major feature film based on Eddie’s inspirational life story has been released worldwide – ‘Eddie The Eagle‘\, featuring Hugh Jackman and Taron Egerton. \nEddie’s talk will be an inspiration to all people on how to succeed against all the odds. Eddie is perhaps the best example of a heroic failure\, whose perseverance and achievement was – it should be stated – gained without any funding. For that\, and for many other reasons\, Eddie is more hero than failure\, and his story continues to win over audiences. So learn how this particular Eagle landed on his feet in the end\, even if it wasn’t in quite the same style as his sporting rivals. \n  \n  \nStandard ticket £19 \nThis is a seated event. Please contact the venue for any access requirements. \nPlease note: tickets are non-refundable.

SUMMARY:Simon Yates: My Mountain Life
DESCRIPTION:On the remote Siula Grande in Peru in June 1985\, mountaineer Simon Yates found himself in a desperately unenviable position.\nHe was slowly being pulled off the mountain face by his injured partner\, Joe Simpson\, dangling on the rope 50 metres below. His decision to cut the rope saved both their lives in the epic of survival that followed and with the publication of the book ‘Touching The Void’ and the later film\, both climbers became household names. \nIt was an experience that could have put many off the sport of mountaineering- but not Simon. Over 30 years later\, he is still a very active exploratory climber and guide\, making several expeditions to the mountains each year. From the Arctic to the Antarctic\, Alaska to Central Asia there is hardly a significant range that he has not visited. \nCome along and witness Simon’s tireless journey from that mountain in Peru to some of the remotest on the planet and share with him the drama\, excitement and beauty of modern\, lightweight alpinism. Told with wit\, dry humour and lavishly illustrated with images and film collected on his great climbs. \nSimon is a totally engaging speaker\, who both entertains and inspires. \nStandard ticket £15 \nPlease note: tickets are non-refundable.
